As a designer who was a part of the development team for Seedly, I was driven by my son's passion for growing plants and his desire to hold the seed as an ornament. My aim was to create a wearable device that would make the process of growing seeds both engaging and educational for children, particularly with regards to sustainable agriculture. The Seedly wearable necklace serves as an interactive tool for growing seeds, where children can name their seed, monitor its growth, and receive alerts for necessary care such as watering and exposure to sunlight.
The device encourages children to develop a personal relationship with their plants, fostering a sense of responsibility and ownership. The Seedly experience is further enhanced by its map display, which allows children to see their own progress and connect with other young gardeners in their community. This creates a sense of community and encourages children to understand the impact their actions have on the environment. The ultimate goal of the project was to promote not only a love and appreciation for nature, but also to cultivate a generation of environmentally conscious and responsible individuals. By ensuring that the plants grown through Seedly never suffer from neglect, children will grow up with a deep respect for the environment.
